Hot buttered rum

There's nothing like this classic New England drink to warm you to your toes on a cool autumn evening. The Joy of Cooking notes that it is rather curious that "the Puritans made drinks like this one, which has been said to make a man see double and feel single". I suppose I'd better administer this drink to David rather carefully then.

Recipe

from The Joy of CookingServes 1 1 tsp confectioner's sugar2 oz dark rum1 tbsp butterfreshly grated or ground nutmegboiling waterPlace confectioner's sugar in an 8-oz glass and add 2 ounces of boiling water and 2 ounces of rum. Add in butter and fill the glass or mug with boiling water. Stir well until the butter dissolves. Sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg on top.

Musings

A few notes on preparation: David asked me to add 1/2 tsp of brown sugar to give it just a little extra sweetness.Warm, buttery and smooth. David noted it makes an excellent nightcap, with just the right amount of sweetness and surprisingly not too boozy tasting for having 2 shots of rum. He did note that he was seeing double--though admittedly that might have resulted from spending the day writing feverishly at his computer.
